Buford High Yellow Jackets History

Located in eastern Lancaster County where Highway 9 and Highway 522 intersect, Buford High School is the heart of this rural community. Named for Colonel Abraham Buford, the school is approximately one mile north of the Buford Massacre revolutionary battle site. The central focus of the Buford community is its schools, and the greatest strength of the schools is the local people who support them. People in the Buford area take great pride in their schools and community.

The school day consists of four 90-minute blocks of instruction, although the freshman class operates on a modified shortened morning schedule. Some of the students are enrolled in remote course including AP History and college credit course through USC-L that are transmitted live to the Distance Learning Lab. Teacher cadet program is offered to those interested in entering the education profession. The High School 101 course is designed to assist freshmen with study skills, conflict resolution, and understanding diversity. Technology is readily available for use by all students and faculty. Two computer classrooms in addition to a mobile laptop cart are available. Interactive whiteboards are key features to instruction. The library media center maintains a current collection with over 6000 titles.

Over fifty-four percent of the high school’s faculty have earned a Masters degree or above. The chairman of the science department is the point of contact for science teachers in the upstate five-county consortium, the North Central Math and Science Hub. The Army JROTC program has been designated Honor Unit with Distinction almost every year since its inception. The athletic teams excel in the county with varsity baseball team reaching state playoffs and lady jacket softball team earning the ultimate state championship in 2016. The band program continues to grow as the cheerleading team continues to participate in state competitions.

The students are very active in service learning activities both for credit and non-credit. Many of the students participate with the Red Cross blood drive by working in the donor room and furnishing refreshments and donating blood. The students also donate and collect money for United Way, National Leukemia Society, Juvenile Diabetes Association, HOPE of Lancaster, and the March of Dimes. Each year the students help with the regional Special Olympics program. For over seventeen years we have had a chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on campus and also are engaged with local churches through the First Priority program.
